Youth programs of the Nova Scotia SPCA get an A+
Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nova Scotia (February 16, 2011) –– The Nova Scotia SPCA is reaching out to youth to spread the message of responsible pet ownership and help Nova Scotia become a more humane province with two provincial programs: The Girl Guides of Canada Paw Prints on Your Heart Challenge and the 3rd Annual Art Contest and Exhibition.
The Nova Scotia SPCA launched a youth education program in collaboration with the Girl Guides of Canada in 2010 called Paw Prints on Your Heart. The aim of the challenge is to promote awareness of the importance of caring for animals and the problems posed by unwanted and uncared for companion animals. Participants range in age from 5 to 17 and include Sparks, Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders and Rangers. Last October, this program received the Education Award at the International Summit for Urban Animal Strategies after more than 500 girls received their patch! This year, numbers are expected to double and entries have been received from Ontario, BC and Alberta in addition to Nova Scotia.
The 3rd Annual Art Contest and Exhibition is a program that was launched to encourage youth (from Kindergarten to Grade 12) to express their feelings about animal welfare through art. All entries will be displayed and the winners will be announced at the Society’s Annual General on April 16, 2011. Entries are due by April 1, 2011 and this year’s theme is the Year of the Cat! The Year of the Cat is a national initiative where provincial and regional SPCAs and Humane Societies along with industry and the veterinary community are jointly promoting the importance of increasing the value of owned, homeless and feral cats in an effort to address cat overpopulation in Canada
