Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nova Scotia (Monday, April 18, 2011) ––The Nova Scotia SPCA has formally announced their line up for their highly anticipated Animal Wellness Conference (AWC), scheduled for June 3 and 4 at the Nova Scotia Community College Waterfront Conference Campus in Dartmouth. Early bird registration begins today and prices go up May 1! Early bird price for the two day conference is $100. Single day tickets are available for $60.

The AWC is a new event geared towards the public, professionals and volunteers interested in learning more about animal welfare. As the host, the Nova Scotia SPCA will be offering a networking forum, educational workshops and sponsorship opportunities. The event promises to be stimulating and educational; the first such event of its kind in Atlantic Canada!

Programming will cover four subject tracks: vet, shelter, legal and community. Friday, June 3 is geared towards professionals, including the veterinary community and industry, where Saturday, June 4 will be geared towards the general public. Both days would appeal to volunteers and enthusiasts alike. Topics include, but are not limited to: companion animal health, wildlife, shelter medicine, emergency medicine, feline trap, neuter and return, animal cruelty and the law, nutrition and pet health, stress, burnout and compassion fatigue and much more!

The Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre at the Atlantic Veterinary College will be talking about the effective veterinary response to animal abuse; Full Circle Veterinary Alternatives from Dartmouth will present the benefits of integrated and holistic medicine; Dr. Don Rushton of Westwood Hills Veterinary Hospital in Tantallon will talk about advancements in orthopedics; and the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association will be discussing the Association of Shelter Veterinarians Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters. Additionally a host of acclaimed veterinarians will be leading discussions on dental care, urinary tract disease, the prevention of obesity, and pediatric spay and neuter. Other workshops include grooming, nutrition and various aspects of pet care and pet health. Effective shelter management will be explored with topics like finding efficiencies, managing flow and volunteer engagement. Celebrated behaviour consultants will be hosting a panel on common sense temperament testing, dog bite prevention and dog training. In the legal track, attendees will be inspired by a presentation by the RCMP Police Dog Service and their role in explosive profiling and detection, in addition to presentations by keynote attorneys on animals and the law and bylaw drafting and enforcement.
